What our Cows are fed to produce 100% natural organic milk:We buy our organic milk from family farms committed to the highest organic standards, from generations of farming wisdom. Our supplier has their own special blend of foods that they give their cows, just like you have a diet that is different from your neighbor's. The cows feed must be consistent or her digestive system gets upset and she "goes off feed", just like when humans eat a very rich dessert. Of course, in the organic herds, all of the feeds and pastures must be certified as organic. The majority of the cow’s diet is pasture grasses, silage (which is fermented chopped pasture grasses), and some alfalfa hay. That component will be about 65-75% of their diet and will depend on the season of the year and what is growing. In the spring, the grass component will be close to 100%. The grass in the pasture has the most nutrition in the spring. During the summer, when the grass is brown it has very little nutrition. During the winter, because of the rain, the grass is too young and is mostly water, and the pasture and ground water are fragile and must be protected. Additional foods, are the more concentrated feeds, including grains, that supply carbohydrates, fat, protein and fiber. The grain mix component will be 20-30%(again depending on the time of the year). There are a number of feeds in this category, such as: Cottonseed, barley, corn, soy (in various forms), molasses, almond hulls, wheat, rye, canola, rice, figs, beet pulp, brewers mash, and sunflower. The choice of what mix to use can depend on the needs of the animal (such as more energy foods during cold weather), availability and price. Our dairies are not allowed to feed animal byproducts. Our plain yogurt and paneer are ALL certified organic and produced without antibiotics, synthetic hormones and pesticides. And they're regionally produced, so you can enjoy freshness and local flavor.
